Why choose acupuncture?
Acupuncture originated in China and other far eastern cultures over 2000 years ago where it still features in mainstream healthcare, both as a stand-alone therapy and in combination with conventional western medicine. Whilst it is used in many parts of the world to treat illness, it was originally practiced as a preventative medicine, with the emphasis placed on maintaining health. Practitioners were well schooled in recognising signs of imbalance and correcting them to keep their patients well. Today, research has shown it to be effective in treating a wide range of conditions and the NHS also actively recommend it for a number of medical conditions. How does it work? From a Western perspective MRI scans have shown that acupuncture calms the central nervous system, regulating hormones and releasing endorphins which in turn trigger the body's healing processes. In Chinese medicine we would call this re-balancing the Qi, or vital energy of the body. Research is continuously showing that its actions and benefits are significant. According to traditional Chinese philosophy, our health depends on the smooth flow of this vital energy (Qi). A disrupted, obstructed or deficient flow can result in symptoms of pain and illness for a variety of lifestyle and environmental reasons. Through helping to maintain the body’s equilibrium, acupuncture can help re-establish the flow of ‘qi’ to restore the body to health and is therefore used to treat a wide variety of conditions. Leonie practices Five Element acupuncture, which is one of the oldest forms of acupuncture and has been developed and practiced for over 2000 years. The observations of human nature that are inherent to this style, are as applicable today as ever, and its emphasis on emotional as well as physical wellbeing, makes it a very useful tool to help people meet the challenges of our ever-changing, modern world. |
