Acupuncture

Acupuncture originated in China and other far eastern cultures where it still features in mainstream healthcare, both as a stand-alone therapy and in combination with conventional western medicine.  Rooted in Taoist philosophy, the Five Element acupuncture system is over 2000 years old, yet in many ways is more applicable today than ever before. In our ever-changing world, our ability to be flexible in mental functions such as beliefs, emotions and attitudes, as well as being adaptable in our biochemistry and immunology is crucial to our health.

How it works

According to traditional Chinese philosophy, our health depends on the state of the body's vital energy, or Qi. A smooth and balanced flow is associated with health, while a disrupted, obstructed or deficient flow manifests in illness. Qi can become disturbed, depleted or blocked for a number of lifestyle and environmental reasons, which often result in symptoms of pain and illness.

Acupuncture therefore works to help maintain the body’s equilibrium. It involves the insertion of very fine needles into specific points on the body to regulate the flow of ‘qi’.

Five Element Acupuncture can help with a wide range of conditions, but the effect of good acupuncture is more than simply addressing symptoms. This system of medicine recognises that many ailments are the product of emotional as much as physical distress, and gives us a framework of how to assess and treat the cause of illness. Treatment is aimed at the root of the issue as well as the symptoms, which helps to resolve health issues and enhance a feeling of wellbeing.
